Tips For Winter Driving

by: David Maillie

Winter driving can be hazardous and stressful. Wind, snow, ice and blizzard conditions increase the normal dangers of driving. There is a lot you can do before the winter driving season and during a storm to protect yourself and your family.

Before winter arrives, have your car inspected to be sure it is ready for the road conditions. You can do this yourself or take it to a qualified mechanic. Check the battery, wipers and fluid, thermostat, brakes, ignition system, antifreeze, exhaust system, lights, oil level, heater and defrosters. Make sure everything is in good working order to keep you safe throughout the cold weather.

Check your tires to be sure they are road ready. Install tires that are appropriate for the driving conditions. In moderate amounts of snow, all weather radials will do the job nicely. If you live in a climate where you experience a lot of snow, consider snow tires. These have better tread to deal with snow and ice.

Prepare an emergency kit to keep in the back of your car. This will ensure that you are prepared in the event that you get stuck in the snow. Things to include in the kit:

Ice scraper

Small broom

Small shovel

Kitty litter or a bag of sand (to give traction if you get stuck in snow or ice)

Blankets or a sleeping bag

Flashlight with batteries

Flares or warning triangles

Plastic bags

First aid kit

Tool kit

Jumper cables

Bright cloth to use as a flag

Help sign for back window

Extra hat and gloves

Food and water to sustain you if you get stuck

A book, Bible or Prayer Cards to keep you busy and calm in the event you get stuck.

Charged cell phone (always carry this, especially in the winter)

Keep your gas tank at least half full at all times. This adds weight to the car and will ensure that you won?t run out of gas in the event you get stuck.

Driving in the Snow

Pay attention to the weather forecasts and road conditions in the winter months. If the weather is bad, stay home if at all possible. If you must venture out, travel in the daylight. You are more likely to find help if you get stuck during the day. Never warm up your vehicle in the garage. This releases carbon monoxide, which is toxic and can kill you.

When driving, always wear your seatbelt. Wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from the glare of the sun reflecting off the snow. Know your car and how it handles in the snow. Features like traction control and antilock brakes can be useful in bad weather conditions. Know how these work and if your car is new, practice driving it in a snow covered parking lot before venturing out on the road.

Take it slow, especially in icy conditions. Don?t tailgate and be sure to allow a safe distance between vehicles. Do everything slowly, stopping, accelerating and turning. Leave plenty of time and space to maneuver. Sliding and skidding usually happen when turning, stopping or accelerating. Going extra slow will ensure your safety.

If the visibility is low, slow down even more. Consider getting off highways and driving even slower. This will take you out of the path of large trucks that can cause accidents. Use only your low beams, as your high beams will reflect back off the snow and won?t increase your visibility. Turn on your hazard lights to be sure other drivers see you.

In the event your car gets stuck, don?t get out. Put up the hood and tie your cloth to the antennae. This will make you more visible to emergency vehicles and other drivers. Keep the windows, air grill and tail pipe clear of snow. Wrap up in blankets and huddle up with passengers to stay warm. Run the heat for fifteen minutes each hour to keep from freezing. Move your body around to stay warm.

Keeping your car clean throughout the winter is important. Salt on the roads is important for safety, but will wreak havoc on the finish. If left on for long periods, it can cause rusting. Wash your vehicle weekly to remove salt and wax to protect the paint. Salt also leaves a coating on your headlights that can impair their operation. This will make you less visible to other vehicles. New Lite Headlight Cleaner and Restorer will return the lights to like new condition.

About The Author

David Maillie is a chemist with over 12 years experience in biochemical research and clynical analysis.
Ball Joints and Your Car's Suspension System

by: Matthew C. Keegan

An important part of your car?s suspension system is its ball joints. Made of extra tough steel, ball joints act as the pivot point between two parts: the suspension and your car?s tires. Ball joints help support your car?s weight and, as is the case with some vehicles, ball joints may be used to help set the alignment. Let?s take a closer look at this key component of your car?s suspension system.

Enclosed in a steel housing, ball joints are used on the front end of almost every car, truck, SUV, and minivan. As might be expected, ball joints are subject to a lot of wear and tear, so to properly protect them ball joints are housed in an enclosed boot to keep dirt away from the joint assembly.

There are two types of suspension systems that use ball joints. The first is a conventional system that uses an upper and lower ball joint. The second is called a MacPherson strut system that uses a single lower ball joint and an upper strut bearing. No upper ball joint is needed as the upper strut bearing does the job instead.

Maintenance for ball joints has changed over the years for most cars. Many vehicles come equipped with ball joints that are permanently lubed, so lubrication is not necessary nor is it even possible as the pack that holds the lubrication is permanently sealed. When ball joints wear out or are damaged, you can find replacement ball joints that come with lubrication fittings; in this case you would need to lubricate your ball joints on a regular basis as in when you change your vehicle?s oil.

When performing an inspection of your car?s suspension, your ball joints should be looked at too. Have a complete wheel alignment performed and make certain that the ball joints are not worn. If the ball joints wear out and are not changed, you will soon experience uneven tire wear or unreliable steering, such as wandering. Clearly, worn out ball joints are a safety issue that must be tended to and fixed immediately.

Ball joints are developed for the specific make/model of your vehicle. Many models share the same suspension system as other models within the brand, but to be sure check your vehicle?s repair manual for the right replacement ball joints. Certain manufacturers, such as Moog, develop ball joints for many makes/models and can be used by mechanics that prefer this particular product. Check online to find out more information about Moog ball joints and whether they are right for your car.

Remember: ball joints are an important part of your vehicle?s suspension system. Annual check ups of the suspension can head off costly problems which can also impact your safety.

About The Author

Copyright 2006 ?
Buying A Used Car? Know The Basics

by: Gregory Ashton

If you feel purchasing a new car is tricky, then buying a second hand car can be quite trickier. But don't fret just yet--with these guidelines to keep you on track, that used car could be one of the sweetest deals you've ever had.

Where to Look

Snoop around. It pays to be on the lookout for owners wanting to shift to a newer model, and thus wanting to sell the car of your dreams. This is where your friends and family come in. Aside from referrals, they could more or less ensure that the price is reasonable and the car's ownership history is satisfactory.

Asking the Right Questions

Why are the owners letting the car go? Make sure that they are not selling due to any major problems.

How long have they owned the car? Given proper maintenance, a five to seven year-old car would generally be in good condition. What repairs have been done, or are currently needed? How's the mileage? The lower the mileage, the better. However, a used car with more miles could be satisfactory, too. In this case, ask about the vehicle's use. Was it a family car limited to city driving? Does the car come with a warranty?

Take Note of the following:

Body rust or holes are difficult to repair. A body panel rusting through is to be replaced. Different paint shades from one panel to another, peeling and cracked paint, or smudges on other car part indicates a poor re-paint job, which needs to be re-done. Threadbare tires, chipped or cracked glass, the electrical work and what's beneath the hood should be given proper attention, too.

Going Out for a Test Drive

If it's a manual car, the clutch shouldn't slip. If the clutch slips, instead of being steady as it accelerates, the motor will be revved up as when using neutral. If this happens get yourself a new clutch! Is the exhaust not chugging out excess smoke and noise? The car may need some good motor repair, or some of the exhaust system parts replaced. Do the pothole test. Overly shaky rides could indicate a suspension problem, an alignment problem and or a tire problem. Always have a trusted mechanic or a car aficionado friend to thoroughly go over the car with you.

The Turn Over, at Last

The number of previous owners, registration details, applicable taxes, and insurance papers - should all be properly documented. With the paperwork done and the payment terms agreed upon, you're ready to hit the road, and enjoy the ride!

About The Author

Gregory Ashton, your resident automobile enthusiast, bringing to you over 20 years of vehicular passion, and expertise; presents for your approval his insider secrets on selecting, buying, and maintianing the car that is ideal for you. http://www.best-car-buying-tips.com.

Buying Jewelry For Your Business Part 4 Buying Platinum Jewelry

by: Sam Serio

Whether you presently own a retail or web based business and are looking for an additional profit center or you are thinking of starting a business, jewelry is a ?no-brainer? choice for a proven product category. The buying public, (particularly women) never tires of jewelry as the choices in color, materials, finishes and styles are endless and innovations are continual. Every generation reinvents jewelry for itself in much the same way that it reinvents music and fashion. Styles change but the basic facts remain the same. If you are a seasoned professional, please consider the following a refresher course. To the new comer, use this information as a foundation for your ongoing jewelry education.

The Facts About Platinum Jewelry

Platinum is a precious metal that costs more than gold. It usually is mixed with other similar metals, known as the platinum group metals: iridium, palladium, ruthenium, rhodium and osmium.

Different markings are used on platinum jewelry as compared with gold jewelry, based on the amount of pure platinum in the piece. The quality markings for platinum are based on parts per thousand. For example, the marking 900 Platinum means that 900 out of 1000 are pure platinum, or in other words, the item is 90% platinum and 10% other metals. The abbreviations for platinum - Plat. or Pt. - also can be used in marking jewelry.

Items that contain at least 950 parts per thousand pure platinum can be marked simply platinum. Items that have at least 850 parts per thousand pure platinum can be marked with the amount of pure platinum and the word platinum or an abbreviation (for example, 950 platinum, 900 Plat. or 850 Pt.). Jewelry that contains less than 850 parts per thousand pure platinum, but has a total of 950 parts per thousand of platinum group metals (of which at least 500 parts is pure platinum), may be marked with both the amount of pure platinum and the amount of the other platinum group metals in the piece. For example, the marking 600 Plat. 350 Irid. means that the item has 600 parts per thousand (60%0 platinum, and 350 parts per thousand (35%) iridium, totaling 950 parts per thousand of platinum group metals, and 50 parts per thousand (5%) other metals.

About The Author

Sam Serio is an Internet Marketer, musician and a writer on the subject of jewelry and gemstones.
Car Care Tips ? How to Keep Your Car in Immaculate Condition

by: Paul MacIver

There are several things you must do to keep your car in immaculate condition and retain its value. Apart from regular mechanical servicing and maintenance, your car must also be groomed regularly to keep it looking like new. This means more than simply putting it through the carwash each week. Although it takes a bit longer, you?ll find that hand grooming your car achieves a far better result. There?s no need to spend a lot of money on car care products, however you will need to buy a few. These are some tips I use every time I clean my car.

Exterior

Rinse your car down to get rid of excess dirt, and then wash it with a sponge and soapy water. Once you?ve washed the whole car, rinse it off and then dry it with a soft cloth. If you don?t dry your car afterwards, water droplets gather dust, and when they dry out, you?re left with many spots all over the body of the car. This is especially noticeable with dark colored cars.

Every month or so you should use a bug and tar removal product on the body of your car. There are many of these types of products available at most car care stores. A great product to go for is one which removes bugs, tar and other spots, while polishing the car?s surface at the same time.

Polishing and waxing your car regularly maintains the ?shiny look? and also protects the paint from being damaged by the sun.

Always clean the wheels and shine the tires. If your car has alloy wheels, dirt shows up more easily and makes them look dull. You can buy wheel cleaning products which remove the build up of brake dust, but if you clean them each time you wash your car, you should only need to use water and a cloth. When shining the tires, I always use a spray-on tire shine which is quick and easy to use. This not only keeps them looking like new, but protects them from the sun and makes the whole car look magnificent.

For other external areas, use a surface protecting product which is designed to protect rubber, vinyl and plastic from the sun?s UV rays. This can be used on bumpers, rubber seals around doors and windows, and for the interior as well.

Interior

Purchase some car seat covers to protect your seats from getting worn out. They can easily be taken off and washed once in a while. I vacuum the seats and carpet every time I clean my car. Dirt and grit which falls deep into the carpet causes it to wear out quickly, so regular vacuuming is the best way to prevent this. Buying a set of floor mats will keep the majority of dirt from getting into your carpet.

Clean the inside of your car?s windows with a glass cleaning product and a soft cloth. I use a normal household glass cleaning spray for this and it seems to do the job. When cleaning the dashboard and other interior surfaces, be careful you don?t use a product that will damage them. Some vinyl and plastic surfaces can be ruined simply by using the wrong product when cleaning. Once cleaned, you can use a surface protecting spray on these areas also.

When you aren?t using your car, park it in the garage. This not only keeps it out of the weather, but also prevents it from getting dirty. If you don?t have access to a garage, consider buying a car cover. Protecting your car from the weather as much as possible will ensure it remains immaculate.

Go to http://seatcovers-online.info for information on car seat covers, car detailing products and vehicle covers.

About The Author

Paul MacIver is a car enthusiast, and writes about various vehicle-related topics for http://www.vehicle-covers.info.
Advice On Dealing With A Defective Car Seat And Getting Help

by: Rishi Chawla

The automobile market can be intimidating, and if you are just starting out in the wonderful world of wheels you may need advice on buying your first car. There are so many options for car buyers: new or used, red or blue, sports car or SUV, two or four doors?and that is just for starters! Also, as a new car buyer you need to be wary of advice on buying your first car, because there are still quite a few snake-oil salesmen out there in the automotive market looking to sell you a lemon. Following you will find some solid advice on buying your first car.

The first consideration for anyone who wants to buy his or her first car is usually whether to buy new or used. Many first car buyers are young people who are just starting out, so the necessity of buying used is often present. Advice on buying your first car new from a showroom is fairly straightforward: buy from a reputable dealer, research the best type of vehicle for you, and seek out the best deals including free extras, low interest and rebates. However, if you plan to buy a used vehicle, where should you look to avoid getting taken advantage of? Most car dealerships also sell ?gently used? cars, usually those that have been previously leased. When these are out of your price range, there are also many used car lots with lower-priced second-hand vehicles. Look for a car dealer who is willing to do all the necessary repair work to get your first car in top running condition, and who also has all the necessary certifications to be in business. Ask whether you can talk to other people who have bought cars from the dealer and find out if they have had major problems with the vehicle. Always test-drive a car before you buy!

When it comes to the car itself, there are a number of things you should check out on your first car. You can examine the tires, the body and the interior on sight and look for possible problems. When considering the tires, be alert for rips and gouges and demand replacements for poor tires or ask for a lower purchase price. Also, uneven wear on tires indicates an alignment or suspension problem, in which case you should tell the dealer to perform the repairs before you will consider buying. On the body of the car, a few dents and scratches won?t affect the performance - but several of them could indicate the car has been in an accident. Also, rust along the bottom of doors or on the frame can attack the structure of the vehicle. Excessive rust is a bad sign. Check the interior of the car thoroughly for missing mirrors, frayed seatbelts, loose knobs and switches that don?t work. Test the audio system as well. Any of these points can be used as a bargaining tool to lower the asking price!

With any used vehicle, you should always obtain a used car report such as those from CARFAX. This information will tell you whether there are any outstanding liens, holds, or fines associated with the vehicle, and whether it?s been involved in an accident.

What is the best advice on buying your first car? Take your time, and have fun. With some careful research and a bit of the right knowledge, you can soon say, ?This is my car!?

About The Author

Rishi Chawla has a informative site on lemon law for owners of defective cars. http://www.your-lemon-car.com/.

Are You Thinking Of Buying A Used Car?

by: Gregory Ashton

Buying a used car can either be a wise or a foolish move. Someone with no background or knowledge whatsoever on finding a good buy might just be duped into a bad deal and end up with somebody else's garbage. But for the knowledgeable buyer, a significant amount of money might be saved by settling with a secondhand car.

Here are some tips to set you on the right track.

1. CONSIDER THE KIND OF CAR YOU NEED.

It's okay to stick to a price range or budget. But first consider the kind of car you be need. Prices vary according to the brand and make of a car. For instance, a small sedan is cheaper, but if you'd pack that car with lots of people or packages, that would cause tearing or breakdown. This would necessitate lots of repair jobs which would mean more expenses for you.

2. DO YOUR HOMEWORK.

Check out the classifieds for the regular market price ranges on the type of used car that you are going to buy.

3. CHEAP IS NOT ALWAYS THE BEST.

Don't be fooled by the price. Consider the amount of money you will still need to shell out to recondition the used car once you buy it.

4. WHERE TO SCOUT

Private sellers usually sell at a cheaper price. The advantage though of buying from a dealer is that it usually comes with good warranty.

Be bold enough to scout from private sellers if you are confident that you can assess the condition of the used car fairly well. If not, maybe you could bring a mechanic to check out the vehicle.

When opting to buy from used car dealers, be careful not to be taken in by persuasive talk. Don't take their word for it, check the car yourself.

5. TEST DRIVE BASICS

Be sure to watch out for these:

a. Does the car swerve on either direction? (Also, see if the tires have uneven wear.) If so, it would need a wheel alignment.

b. Is the air cool enough? If not, check if it's simply a lack of freeon or worse.

c. Are the brakes in good condition?

d. Do you hear unusual sounds? If so, the engine might have problems.

6. INTERIOR CHECKLIST

The condition of the interior gives clue to how much the car has been used and taken cared of. Also, a very low mileage reading on a badly looking interior is a sign of meter tampering.

7. CHECK THE EXTERIOR FOR RUST AND PAINTOVERS.

It might have been in an accident before.

8. CHECK THE GROUND UNDER THE CAR FOR SIGNS OF LEAKAGE.

9. CHECK THE OIL.

Oil should be clear. BLACK colored oil is not a good sign.

10. CHECK THE MUFFLER FOR LEAKS.

A WHITE or BLUE colored emission would be the sign.

Happy used car hunting!

ATVs of All Shapes and Sizes from Yamaha

by: Mitch Johnson

Yamaha has pleased its customers in every aspect possible for years, which is why it is not a surprise that they have succeeded in giving ATV riders what they want. There are new models of Yamaha all terrain vehicles each year and 2005 is no exception. Yamaha (http://www.atv-parts-n-accessories.com/yamaha_atvs.htm) has already released a few new 2005 ATV models in each of their categories, sport, utility and youth.

ATV riders have been extremely pleased in the past with the features and designs produced by Yamaha, which is why consumers continue going back for more, keeping Yamaha ranked among the most popular and trusted ATV providers. Whether a person uses their ATV for working the land or tearing the trails up, and no matter how long they have been involved in the sport, Yamaha consumers are satisfied with the job that gets done.

Riders of all ages and all experience levels flock to Yamaha for their ATV needs because even just one of their stock ATVs can charge through virtually any terrain. The toughness of Yamaha ATVs combined with the high speed for sport riders and the strength for utility riders is the perfect mixture of characteristics for a trusted product. ATVers have reviewed all the models from Yamaha, dating back to the first released, and each new style generates talk about how strong and dependable their four-wheelers are.

To keep their customers pleased and coming back for more, Yamaha tweaks and changes previously successful models so that a new, advanced model can be released to please even more. Examples of this are the new Yamaha Raptor 660R for sport ATVers, and the Grizzly 660R, a utility ATV. These new models have the largest engines of any Yamaha ATVs. Both the Raptor and the Grizzly are established Yamaha ATVs, but the new models are enhanced advancements of the older models.

The 660 engines give sport riders an edge of speed off the line in a race and utility riders can tear through anything carrying a large load with an ATV engine that size. In addition to the constant upgrades Yamaha releases, they have models that are somewhat of a downgrade to create their youth ATVs. The only downgrades on the youth ATVs are engine and body size.

The same quality and dependability are expected from their youth ATVs. Yamaha has an ATV small enough for children as young as six to ride.

Their sport ATVs are a top choice among racers because of the innovative body designs and high torque engines. For working a ranch or farm, Yamahas utility ATVs are as tough as they get. The utility ATVs from Yamaha are not known for high speed, but other features, such as the four-wheel independent suspension, make these quads the best for a rough ride with a large load.

All of this is not to say Yamaha ATVs are perfect, in fact there are many upgrades and accessories you can add to improve them, but when it comes to the core purpose of an ATV, utility or sport, Yamaha quads can achieve that task, which is what matters most.

About The Author

Mitch Johnson is a successful freelance author that writes regularly for http://www.atv-parts-n-accessories.com/, a site that focuses exclusively on atv reviews, as well as tips on choosing parts and accessories.
Best Condition Check-Up Of A Used Car: When Old Gets Better

by: Gregory Ashton

Today, buying a used car is as important as buying a new car. This is because the growing necessity and demand for cars is extremely important in an individual?s everyday life, especially if the daily activities require a lot of commuting and traveling.

So, buying used cars can be very feasible especially to those who have limited budgets. Actually, buying a used car, say, 2 to 4-year old cars will definitely save an individual as much as 25% to 50% when compared to buying a new one.

But, used cars are not created equal or they are not being maintained on the same level. Hence, it is important to know the proper way to choose used cars and the details to look for when buying one.

With all the many tips that are being offered these days, checking the condition of the used car is the best tip ever.

Here?s a list of the things to be checked before getting the car:

1. Exterior check

Buyers should check on the exterior portion of the car like the paint. Buyers should take note if there are any rusty places present on the exterior body.

Buyers should also make certain that the car is level when inspecting it. It should not sag to one side. If it does that is an indication of frame or spring damage. The tires should be well inflated and the lights should be in good condition.

Buyers should also check the other outer parts of the car like the disc brakes, the glass, the wheel rims, etc.

2. Interior check

It is best if the buyer inspects the interior portion of the car for things like its odor, the controls, the seats and the seat covers, and the pedal rubber. Everything should still be workable.

3. The air-conditioning unit of the car should be working well.

4. Trunk check

The trunk is the most neglected part of the car. Hence, it is important to know if the used car?s trunk area is still in good condition. It should never show any sign of rust accumulation and water entry due to holes and cracks.

5. The under hood test

The buyer of the used car should be aware of the wirings, fluids, belts, hoses, battery, and radiator of his car-to-be. It should not show any signs of damage, rust, or dents.

Best of all, before an individual finally decides on buying a particular used car, it is best if he or she will do a test drive first. In fact, it is one of the most important check-up in order to ensure the efficiency of the used car.
